CASE STUDY - YOUSEQ Edith's Hope is supported by YouSeq, a biotech company based in Winchester, producing the World’s simplest and easiest to understand NGS and qPCR kits. We spoke to CEO Jim Wicks about YouSeq's support of Edith's Hope : When did YouSeq start supporting Edith’s Hope? YouSeq has been supporting Edith’s Hope since YouSeq started in 2018. One of the founding ideas in founding YouSeq was to create profits that can be used for good things. So there is a pledge from our major shareholders to channel at least 20% of our distributed profits to projects that help the most in need. What inspired you to choose Edith’s Hope? Several of our team have donated to Edith’s Hope in the past and many of us have visited the project and seen their extraordinary work first hand. So when we started YouSeq they were top of the list of charities we wanted to support What changes in Uganda have you contributed towards since supporting Edith’s Hope? We were able to move swiftly during the pandemic to finance the building of a new medical unit that’s been used to treat COVID patients and as a vaccination centre. The unit has now become the medical base for the Edith’s Hope Vocational school and will have benefits for years to come. Beyond that we have committed a substantial sum over the next three years to hugely expand the vocational school. The scale up in infrastructure helps to build real sustainability on the ground and moves the organsaion further towards a self-funding, truly sustainable model. That’s really exciting. What benefits for you as a company come with corporate partnership? To really succeed as a business you need more than just financial success. You need to be making the World a better place. We try to do that in lots of ways but supporting Edith’s Hope is very much up there. That sense of purpose and passion that goes beyond traditional business success is a huge motivator. It helps drive us to achieve extraordinary things. Why would you encourage other businesses to support Edith’s Hope? I would encourage every leader in every business to be fighting to put social justice issues right at the top of their agenda. It’s not just a nice thing to do - It can be genuinely World changing and that will be rocket fuel for your team. Edith’s Hope is a wonderful charity to work with too. It’s a very lean organisation so we know that the money goes directly to help some of the World’s poorest people without paying for western overheads. Id love other business to follow suit and help Edith’s Hope to expand their vision with even more income If your company would be interested in any form of corporate sponsorship, please get in touch.
