FOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED ABOUT THE GLOBAL FOOD CRISIS
One in 10 of the world’s population – up to 828 million people – will go to bed hungry tonight.
Extreme weather and drought have collided with the impact of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and rising inflation and now threaten the world’s most vulnerable children and families.
Right now, orphaned children are being impacted by skyrocketing food prices and we are feeling the pressure to meet the emergency needs of the children on our project.
Amid this growing crisis, we’re so thankful for your ongoing support which is helping our team deliver essential care to some of the most vulnerable children in Uganda.
1. WHAT IS GLOBAL FOOD INSECURITY AND HOW ARE WE SUPPORTING OUR FAMILIES?
Food insecurity occurs when a person doesn’t have regular access to enough nutritious food. It’s caused when food simply isn’t available or when a person doesn’t have the resources to obtain it, like a family living in poverty. At its worst, severe food insecurity means a person has no access to food for a day or more.
Thanks to your support our response is two-fold, meeting our child headed families’ urgent nutrition needs now while working towards sustainable, long-term solutions to help build food resilience.
2. HOW CAN WE TACKLE THIS PROBLEM?
OUR AMAZING TEAM
We employ over 30 members of staff in Uganda who are working hard to address the immediate issue and come up with solutions for long term sustainability. They are best positioned to assist in this crisis because they have established trust and relationship within the community— they were there before, will be there during, and will remain long after the crisis.
SUSTAINING LOCAL ECONOMIES
We also deliver monthly food parcels. These supplies, including food, are purchased within the local community to sustain local economies. The goal is to promote local economies whenever possible.
YOUR SUPPORT
Thanks to your support, participants receive routine health checks that enable our local team to monitor every child’s health. When a crisis hits, this means there is already a strategic and targeted response in place.
Over the past two years of the pandemic, our team have been providing food support to families facing hunger, but now the crisis is skyrocketing so too is the number who need help.
3. HOW WILL THE SITUATION AFFECT CHILDREN IN THE COMING MONTHS?
We’ve seen the prices of food, cooking oil, and fuel increase over the last few months. That will likely continue or worsen, impacting households already stretched thin on income. Children living in poverty are likely to be at increasingly severe risk of malnourishment or undernourishment. Similarly, the costs for our team to provide food packages as part of normal project activities will increase—stretching what we are able to do outside of this.
4. I THOUGHT MY MONTHLY DONATIONS COVER A CHILD’S NUTRITIONAL OR FOOD NEEDS?
Yes! Your support provide food packages to fight against malnutrition. Your donation also covers education support, healthcare, counselling, cattle, mentoring and more.
But now the crisis is skyrocketing and so is the number who need help. We need to raise 50 new monthly donors this year to support the additional families joining our project. That’s why we’ve launched our Giving Hope Programme.
Will you stand alongside Edith's Hope and our Ugandan Team as we take action? Your monthly donation to our Giving Hope Programme will provide food packages to orphaned children and families vulnerable to food insecurity. What’s more, your generosity will also help provide long-term, sustainable solutions, enabling these children to build a more hopeful future.
